Weird Luxury Foods that Actually Taste Really Good

When thinking of gourmet, one pictures a nice ribeye steak cooked to medium rare. Cutting into a perfectly cooked ribeye is like cutting into a stick of butter. When such a perfect steak is placed upon your tongue it melts into your mouth. However, not all gourmet foods are as appealing. Some are actually quite revolting to think of! Here is a list of weird gourmet foods that, despite how revolting they sound, actually taste good.

Escargot

Escargot is a staple of France and is essentially steamed snails. Although this sounds repulsive, they taste almost like a mixture of chicken and oyster and have a very rich buttery flavor. Often they are spiced with garlic and garnished with parsley. The French consider escargot to be a delicacy and consume 40,000 metric tons of snails each year. The next time it rains, maybe harvest a few snails from your garden?

Bird’s Nest Soup

This delicacy in China is made from the swift bird’s nest. Unlike most bird’s nests, the swiftlet bird constructs their nest from saliva which sounds horrible, but the Chinese love to eat it. It is extremely expensive because the swiftlet only constructs their nest during mating season. The nest itself tastes like strings of a Jell-O and is said to have healing powers, Additionally, bird’s nest soup is an aphrodisiac.

Puffer Fish

You’d think fish is not that strange, but this fish can be highly toxic and has killed many people over the years. Therefore, puffer fish must be specifically cut by a professional and even then, you have to sign a waiver to consume it. Despite the dire nature surrounding this dish, puffer fish is said to have an amazing buttery flavor and light texture. This dish is so good there is really no comparison. Some would even say that puffer fish is to die for.

Snake Wine

Snake wine is from Vietnam and made with poisonous snakes. Snake wine makes a fantastic centerpiece. The wine itself is said to have medicinal qualities from the venom of the snakes. As the snake sits in the wine, the alcohol neutralizes the poisonous venom making this wine safe for drinking.
